Insurance Doesn't Cover Chiropractic? You Can Still Afford Care

I hear some version of this almost every week: "I've had this back pain for months, but my insurance doesn't cover chiropractic, so I just figured I couldn't afford it."

It makes sense. Most of us have been taught that healthcare works one way: if insurance covers it, you can get it, and if it doesn't, the price is out of reach. For a lot of medical care, that's true.

Chiropractic care is often different. At our clinic, every visit is a $30 flat rate, whether you have insurance or not. For many people, that's less than they'd pay through their insurance anyway.

Insurance Doesn't Cover Chiropractic? You Can Still Afford Care

The Assumption That Keeps People in Pain

When people assume they can't afford care, they usually do one of three things:

  • Wait it out and hope the pain resolves on its own

  • Rely on pain relievers for weeks or months

  • Push through until a manageable problem becomes a bigger one

Some problems do improve on their own. But a stiff neck that turns into recurring cervicogenic headaches (headaches that start from the joints and muscles of the neck), or low back tightness that turns into nerve pain down the leg, is much harder to deal with later. Often, the only thing standing between someone and relief is a pricing assumption that isn't accurate.

Why "Covered" Doesn't Always Mean Cheaper

Even when a plan includes chiropractic benefits, coverage often comes with conditions that make it less helpful than it sounds:

  • High deductibles: Until you meet your deductible, you typically pay the clinic's full contracted rate for each visit. On many plans, that means paying out of pocket for most or all of the year.

  • Copays and coinsurance: After the deductible, you may still owe a copay or a percentage of each visit.

  • Visit limits: Some plans cap the number of chiropractic visits per year. Once you hit the cap, you pay full price.

  • Medical necessity rules: Some plans only cover care for specific diagnoses, or require documentation or approval before they pay.

Here's a simple example. Say a clinic bills insurance for a visit and you haven't met your deductible. You could owe the full contracted amount, plus any charges for exams, imaging, or add-on services. Compare that to a $30 flat rate with nothing added on.

I'm not saying insurance is never worth using for chiropractic. If you have a low copay, no deductible, and plenty of covered visits, your plan may work well for you. But if your insurance doesn't cover chiropractic, or covers it poorly, you haven't lost access to care.

More People Pay Cash for Chiropractic Than You Might Think

Paying out of pocket for chiropractic is common. Our patients come in for many reasons:

  • Their plan excludes chiropractic entirely

  • They have a high-deductible plan and rarely meet the deductible

  • They've used up their covered visits for the year

  • They're self-employed, between jobs, or uninsured

  • They simply prefer one clear price over claims, paperwork, and surprise bills

If you're in any of these situations, you're in good company. For a deeper look at care without any insurance at all, read chiropractic care without insurance in Layton and Roy, UT.

What You'll Pay at Bones Chiropractic

Our pricing is the same for every patient:

  • $30 flat rate per visit

  • No membership required

  • No contracts or prepaid packages

  • No treatment plan sales

  • HSA and FSA cards accepted

That last point matters more than many people realize. Chiropractic care is generally an eligible expense for health savings accounts and flexible spending accounts. If you have one, you can use pre-tax dollars even when your insurance plan doesn't cover chiropractic.

We don't bill insurance, and that's a big part of how we keep the price low. Insurance billing requires coding, claim submissions, follow-ups, and staff to manage it all. Without that overhead, we can charge one simple price. You can see the full breakdown on our affordable chiropractor page.

How to Budget for Chiropractic Without Coverage

If you're paying out of pocket, a few habits will keep your costs predictable:

  • Ask for the total cost upfront. Before agreeing to care anywhere, ask what each visit costs and how many visits are being recommended.

  • Avoid large prepaid commitments. Paying for months of care in advance locks you in before you know how your body will respond. I compare the numbers in chiropractic membership vs. pay per visit: which is actually cheaper?

  • Use your HSA or FSA. Pre-tax dollars stretch your budget further.

  • Base frequency on how you're responding. Visit frequency should depend on your condition and progress, not a preset schedule. Here's more on how often you should see a chiropractor.

You should never feel obligated to keep coming back. If you're curious what that looks like in practice, read do I have to keep going to a chiropractor?

What Your $30 Visit Includes

A lower price doesn't mean a shortcut. Every visit at Bones includes:

  • A conversation about your symptoms and history

  • A physical assessment of the area involved

  • An individualized adjustment based on what we find, not a preset routine

  • A clear explanation of what's going on

  • An honest recommendation, including a referral if chiropractic isn't the right fit

We see patients for back pain, neck pain, headaches, sciatica, and many other common conditions. If it's your first visit, here's what to expect.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I see a chiropractor if my insurance doesn't cover chiropractic?

Yes. At Bones Chiropractic, every visit is a $30 flat rate, so insurance coverage doesn't affect whether you can get care. Many of our patients have plans that exclude chiropractic, have high deductibles, or have no insurance at all.

Is paying cash for chiropractic more expensive than using insurance?

Not always. If you haven't met your deductible, have a high copay, or have used up your covered visits, paying a $30 flat rate is often less than what you would owe through insurance. It also avoids claims, paperwork, and surprise bills.

Can I use my HSA or FSA for chiropractic care?

Yes. Chiropractic care is generally an eligible HSA and FSA expense, and we accept HSA and FSA cards at both our Layton and Roy locations.

Why doesn't Bones Chiropractic bill insurance?

Insurance billing adds administrative overhead that increases the cost of care. Skipping it allows us to offer one simple, transparent $30 price to every patient.

Do I need to buy a package or membership?

No. There are no memberships, contracts, or prepaid treatment plans. You pay $30 per visit, and the decision to return is always yours.
